Merging Outdoor and Indoor Space

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

We had initially done a complete interior renovation on this Stone Georgian residence creating more contemporary interiors. The owners returned wanting to add an indoor-outdoor room that could be used year around but in the summer open to the new pool and terrace in the rear yard. Unlike the previous renovation, they wanted the more contemporary interiors of the addition to be expressed on the exterior.

OUR APPROACH

We created a glass box that is anchored to the house with matching stone veneer, allowing the modern addition to sit comfortably beside the traditional Georgian house. By implementing a folding glass wall system, the new space can be opened for a full 10' by 20' aperture to the new terrace, gardens, and pool.

THE RESULT

The new addition provides a great space for gathering with its lounge area, floating stainless-steel clad fireplace, wet bar, game table, and adjacency to the new outdoor terrace. Below the addition, a new basement includes a home theater which is accessible through a hidden flush door. On the terrace, including a trellis provides ambiance and shade for outdoor dining. Collaborating with the landscape architects at Doyle Herman Design Associates provided modern gardens and strengthened the design’s relationship to the property.

we pinch ourselves every time we drive into the driveway and realize that our house has magically morphed into a larger and more beautiful version of its former self.
