A Well Composed Refuge for a Growing Family

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

After this family fell in love with the historic homes in the Murray Hill area of Scarsdale, we worked closely with them to design a new traditionally styled home that would blend in with its neighbors. On the interior, the client, an interior designer, wished that the home reflect the traditional exterior while also being suitable for a more modern way of life. For a family of five, the home would need to be resilient, but also comfortable and great for entertaining.

Throughout our project, Susan and Ed provided helpful explanation and invaluable guidance.

OUR APPROACH

The home, situated on a difficult L-shaped corner lot with a sloping terrain, had significant drainage issues that had to be addressed. The tennis court was nestled in the dog-leg and the site was regraded to create a large level backyard.  Now a large sunken garden provides plenty of natural light and a smooth transition from the walkout basement, which functions as exercise and play space as well as a Pool House.

THE RESULT

The new Georgian Colonial designed for the family is seamlessly integrated into its historic neighborhood. Inside, refined traditional detailing creates the setting for a modern art collection. Visitors arrive to a formal hedge bordered parking court and proceed into the gallery-like foyer. Here carefully curated views provide a glimpse of the spaces and artwork throughout the home. The family and entertainment areas all open on to a covered veranda, emphasizing the connection to the terraces, pool, and formal gardens.
