Achieving harmony, inside and out

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

A young family moving from New York City settled on the Greenacres neighborhood of Scarsdale, NY as the place to build their dream home. They described their vision as a classic shingle style home with integrated interior and exterior spaces to allow for the full enjoyment of the expansive property. For what would soon become a beautiful retreat, they envisioned a pool, pool house, and tennis court, coupled with broad open lawn spaces for their young family to enjoy.

OUR APPROACH

The interior, although traditional in its detailing, reveals itself as a more relaxed home fit for a busy family that likes to entertain. The centerpiece of the home is the elegant kitchen with its built-in eating area, open to the great room and with views to the landscape.

THE RESULT

The front façade was designed with a hierarchy focused on the entranceway. Two symmetrical gables, strengthened by formal boxwood hedges, frame an arched portico entry. The composition of the house is extended further in a more rambling manner common in this style of home, with a secondary entrance porch and a service wing which separates the parking court from the curved driveway used by visitors. Facing the private yard, a formal porch with a rounded seating area provides a view to the terraced yard and tennis court below. Off the family room and kitchen, a round screened porch provides protection for the grill and outdoor dining.

With its stone base, painted white shingle cladding, and cedar roof, the house exemplifies the style and craft found in the historic New England style. Other traditional details such as the curved diamond motif found in the upper window sashes are repeated throughout the house. It can be found in the paneling above the fireplace in the great room, the glazing of the kitchen cabinets, and the ironwork at the terrace. It is this attention to detail that gives a custom home its true character.
