A Family Retreat for Beach Living

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

A previous client asked us to collaborate on the design of their weekend and summer getaway in the Hamptons. We would be responsible for everything inside the exterior walls, making modifications to the new house’s plan and providing interior design and decorating services to create a fresh retreat for their family and friends. They wanted a contemporary interior, but it needed to be warm and inviting, and made for easy living and entertaining by the beach.

Our house ended up looking better than I ever could have imagined.

OUR APPROACH

Designing woodwork that was clean, yet classic, helped relate to the shingle style exterior while offering a more contemporary look. The white walls with dark floors further enhanced this look and provided a great backdrop for the soft grey palette with bursts of beachy color and alternating textures. Mixing materials like rustic and refined woods, hammered metal, raffia, and stone reinforced the casual modern feel of the interiors. Using rugs that are made of indoor/outdoor materials helps withstand the wear and tear of shore living.

THE RESULT

The kitchen, family room, and living room was designed to flow seamlessly as summer living is an unabbreviated continuum of activity. This open floor plan is orientated towards the garden and outdoor space, overlooking the pool and pool house. The large breakfast table is central to the living space and easily accommodates ten. A discrete dining room which when expanded can seat sixteen comfortably is a space for the occasional formal holiday gathering. This light filled and relaxed interior provides a great space to enjoy time with family and friends.
